January 2019 Challenge for Social Justice

Registration for our January 2019 Challenge for Social Justice is now open. To expand upon our annual Virtual 5k race that takes place every January, the goal of this challenge is to create a grassroots movement to raise awareness of human trafficking, in support of Free To Run Foundation’s partner organizations fighting trafficking in locations around the world. How you decide to challenge yourself in January is up to you. If running or walking is something you normally do, you can pick a day to run or walk a 5 km course wherever you are (aka, a virtual 5k), or you can recruit some friends, family and co-workers and do a 5k together. Or, if you practice yoga, get together with some of your friends and offer a yoga class, and dedicate a few minutes of the class to share about human trafficking. Free To Run can provide you with talking points and other helpful resources, and if you’d like to have others in your community join you, we can list your event or activity on our website.

How you challenge yourself in January to raise awareness of social justice is up to you. As an individual or as a group, whatever skills or talents you have, something that you’re passionate about, or something you want to do to challenge yourself or to go outside of your comfort zone, you can do something that you can use to draw attention to and educate others about human trafficking.

Teams

There are several groups and organizations who have formed teams for the event. In the past we have had teams who all wore the same shirts so they could be identified together. There are no incentives or discounts for registering to be on a team. Offering teams is just a fun way for individuals to join together and support the event.

Donations

This is the first year we haven’t offered a fundraising component as part of the event. While during the first three years, it was always a small percentage of individuals who actually did the peer-to-peer fundraising, but that small group of people usually raised a couple of thousand dollars. For the 2015 race, we wanted to have a quick and easy registration process, so we decided to take at least one year from encouraging individuals to have fundraising pages. We are still hoping we can get some donations that will go to our charity partners. If you wish to donate any amount of money to our Central Ohio initiatives, you make an online donation here: https://www.aplos.com/aws/give/FreeToRunFoundation/Cbus2015.

Final Instructions for Participants

Early Packet Pickup

We are pleased to announce that an optional early packet pickup will be available on Friday, March 20, between noon and 8 pm, at Columbus Running Company’s Short North location. The address is 765 N. High St, south of Hubbard.

You will be able to get your bib, which contains the timing chip and the race shirt, if you registered in time to be guaranteed a shirt. If you are not able to make it to the store on Friday, then you can get your chip and shirt before the race starting at 8:30.

Shirt Availability

The deadline for registering in order to be guaranteed a shirt was February 23. Since we buy our shirts from Freeset in India, we need a longer lead time to order and receive the shirts. At the time the deadline passed, we communicated that we would order extra shirts, so if you registered by March 11, we will have a shirt for you, which you can get either at the early packet pickup or before the race. If you’re not on the guaranteed list, there should be some shirts left, but please check back at the registration table after the race on Saturday.

Directions to Race

Scioto Audubon is located in the Brewery District at 400 Whittier St., just south of the downtown area. When you enter the park on Whittier, you’ll pass a couple of park buildings on the right, then you will turn right on Maier to go towards the climbing walls.
